I started my Instagram a few months ago. It's grow fairly quickly (500+ followers), but I need some tips to help me continue to grow it. What are some of your best practices?

I participate in photo challenges! I know SITS has them from time to time, but I host a #BloggersGetSocial challenge every day as well. I find that the more I post, the more I like and comment, the more followers I get!

Hash tags are vital to growing your following. I like and comment on pictures that follow the same hash tags and they tend to follow back.

Interaction is key! Comment on others photos, use hashtags, participate in challenges and follow people. Its pretty much like any other social media outlet, interaction be key.

Using hashtags and checking out hashtags that you are interested in by liking and commenting will help you gain more followers.

I agree - hashtags and interaction are key. I'd also like to throw in that great photos are helpful as well! I'm more inclined to follow people who constantly take great photos. I take a few extra minutes to lay out my photo the way I like it, then I'll edit it just a tad (usually brightness, contrast, and crop), before publishing. I think that really sets great Instagrammers apart from the rest.

What exactly is a picture challenge on Instagram? I'm trying to increase my following. Thank you!

My instagram following has grown ridiculously fast over the past few months (now sitting at over 14k) and while I can attribute a lot of that to shoutouts from larger accounts there's a lot to be said for simply engaging with your followers all the time as much as possible, answering their questions and offering your own experiences, and of course checking out the trending hashtags and larger accounts similar to your content. I also encourage people following me from other social media platforms to follow me on IG as well. So far, it's working very well.

Mybodyzen- I've heard of shout outs before. How do they exactly work? Which accounts gave you a shout out? Thanks!

Yikes. Sounds like I have a serious problem then. I have had my Instagram account for years and I'm pretty sure I have less than 50 followers.

Mybodyzen- I've heard of shout outs before. How do they exactly work? Which accounts gave you a shout out? Thanks! Well there are different ways that people go about it. I prefer to do shoutout exchanges (shoutout for shoutout) with people of similar interests who I have an established friendship/connection with. We generally talk about it beforehand and agree on the timing etc. But occasionally people will shoutout your account just because they dig your stuff. I've gotten shoutouts from some really awesome people like @missnaturallyashley, @fitncrunchy, @gorgeousssleep, @ hempveganlove and a few others, but the one that had the most impact on my following was when @freeleethebananagirl gave me a shoutout! That was kinda crazy - lol. I owe a lot to her. In my opinion and experience, shoutouts work best (meaning more people feel inspired to follow the person) when it comes from a place of genuine admiration or respect. Don't just give an account a shoutout because they have a big following and you're hoping to get one back - do it because you really think this person could use more credit for their work or you really want to share their recipe, craft or project etc. Whatever it is, people will see how really, genuinely into it you are and that enthusiasm is contagious and it's what causes so many people to click the 'Follow' button.

I've had Instagram for such a long time now, but the amount of followers really started when I started to use hashtags. I guess you have to find your own style, for example using only some, or just using many... I try to post a picture with no or only one hashtag, so that my followers can enjoy a photo with a nice, hashtag-free description. When I post the next picture, I'll add the hashtags to the old one. People will follow you if they will like (and like again) your pictures if you go on posting about the same things. For example, I started to use #travel or similar, and after a while, people will start to remember your name, and then they might see that you post a lot about travel, and then they might follow you if you're lucky My follower count is still very little, so I can really use the tips you're posting here The shoutouts might be a good idea. Do you DM each other to talk about the specifics? How do you go on about that?
