Hi, I guess we all had to start somewhere, right?! I host a blog on wordpress.com and am looking to expand. I would love to have ads, more personal touches to the design, etc. There is SO much information on the internet it is overwhelming. I am tech savvy and can learn quickly but, again, don't know where to start. I see there are people that offer wordpress templates for purchase. Some of the designs are just what I am looking for and in my price range. I don't even know what that means. I am sure a simple question but one I have not been able to find an answer to. Do I need my own URL? What if I run into tech issues down the road? Would the blog not be associated with WordPress anymore? Who do I contact? There are a lot of online tutorials but again just overwhelmed at this point. Any assistance would be MOST appreciated!!! Thanks, Stephanie

@steph these questions are great and I really think you're ready to have your own self-hosted blog! To do so, you need to: - buy your own domain name, - buy hosting services - install wordpress.org - install a theme that you like - set up your blog the way you like - install and configure plugins - start blogging!
You can look for info online and DIY or hire someone to do so for you. Good luck

I agree with Delia! Definitely get a domain name, hosting, etc. Wordpress.org is the only way you'll be able to do ads - wordpress.com doesn't allow it - so I'd make the switch sooner rather than later. Suggested reading: slapdashmom.com/how-to-start-a-blog-in-7-easy-steps/

I suggest Godaddy for your domain. NO matter what you pick...make sure its a .com Unless you are from Canada, then a .ca is fine. I suggest getting hosting through Hostgator.com When it comes to setting everything up, it will seem very daunting and confusing. You will learn as you go. Make sure you pick a theme you want. I don't suggest going with the free ones if you are doing this as a business.
If you are doing this as a business and the whole setting up thing is taking to much time and its keeping you from moving forward, then outsource it. I have an amazing girl I ork with if you need a referral. Just email me at somer@somernelson.com Good Luck!!

@steph I would definitely go self-hosted on Wordpress. You would be going from Wordpress.com, that's hosted by them to Wordpress.org, hosted by yourself through a hosting company. I personally host through Bluehost.com (afflink - bit.ly/1xIyjdW) and they have great customer service. You can also purchase your domain through them, but as @somenelson said, GoDaddy is good for domains. They tend to be cheaper. It really depends on your skill level when it comes to setting things up. It can be very overwhelming, so be ready to do a lot of googling and reading or you can totally hire someone to do it all for you. I do custom blog setup and design. I'm more than happy to help! I also have premade themes that are set to go, and I also offer a blog installation service if you purchase one of them. Shoot me an email at hello@sweetfacestudio.com. Good luck! :-)
