So I have been running into great bloggers from my neck of the woods (Chicago). They are good at interacting when I post a comment for the most part but it seems like I am not getting the same interaction with them when I add them to my twitter, instagram, etc. I participated in the blogger challenge for one blogger for instance and when I added her to my twitter account, she did not return the favor, I don't get it?
Any suggestions how I can get them to follow me also?

Introduce yourself, they may not realize that you are someone they have been interacting with already via the comments on their blog. Also, just because you follow them doesn't mean they have any obligation to follow you back. Some people are strict about who they follow, especially when you become very popular then everyone wants to be your friend (for their own reasons), or maybe they don't feel they have enough in common with you.

chicitymom: Kara's advice is spot on. When you follow someone, do it from genuine interest and not expecting something in return. Also stay focused on who does interact with you, need your advice and services, etc you'll get more of that

I tend to just say "Hi, following from The Crunchy Mom Next Door!" and usually people say something like, "Hi, followed you back!"

I'm right there with Delia's response about not expecting anything in return. I suspect bigger bloggers with more experience can see right through someone who is only liking them in the hopes of leeching off their traffic. No, I don't think that's what you're doing. Just pointing it out so you know to be careful when connecting with other bloggers.

What about the link ups when you are required to follow all the hosts via social media? I kind of feel like... ok we followed you because you're hosting AND put a link back to YOUR page on our blog... but if it weren't for us, you'd have no traffic to your site for those link ups, so it seems like it's not a "community" coming together in those instances but a "hike up my blog stats and maybe you'll get a few clicks to your blog post" thing. Just seems slanted to one side.

Chat them up! Let them know that you're new and you love their blog because XYZ. Most of the time, they'll return the follow without you having to ask.

Bothers me greatly.

stephallthevs and desiab - don't follow/participate if you don't want to I think you should just do your thing and not be bothered by what other bloggers are doing or not doing. I learned a great deal about blogging and business just by doing what I thought was right, regardless of what others were saying or doing. I definitely recommend to learn as much as you can, but always filter everything through your own system.

Honestly, when you've got a busy Twitter account you just stop noticing who is following you. The concept of following back goes out of the window when you start ignoring notifications. Instead, just follow them because you want to, and interact with them until they realise they want to follow you. Letting them know you're that person from their blog comments will help - they might even have a list to keep track of commenters.

That's a good idea! Thanks. I did get someone to follow me that I loved because I participated in one of her Giveaways and won! And when I participated in another give away the blogger added me,and I was a long time fan of hers, so that is one good way to have your favorite bloggers know you as well!

chicitymom- I definitely agree, it can be bothersome when you try to gain exposure by following a bunch of people and they don't follow back! I recently started my own blog and have followed about 50 girls. I got one follower. How does that work? I guess I'm rambling a little, but I do find it frustrating.

I agree with all the advice that has already been given to you. Tag them in your SM shares too if you mentioned them in your blog posts. Above all else follow someone because you honestly like their blogs and them. Build a relationship the natural way and you'll see great success.
