I did a few tweaks to my blog today and managed to kill my comments. It seems that all of my comments are gone. I have tried contacting Intense Debate who I had been using, but they are non-responsive and their Twitter does not appear to have been used since 2012. I am obviously considering a new commenting system, so tell me what you think. Is there one you love and why? Or one you can't stand? I'm on blogger if that matters.

Yikes! I have no idea what would be going on with your comments, but I just wanted to offer my sympathies!

mamarabia, if you are on blogger, why not use the blog commenting system that's integrated with your blog? It's the best option for you now. Of course, when you consider moving to self-hosted wordpress (.org) you'll have more options for customization and control Good luck, I hope you get it fixed!

I use the WordPress one that's default. I hate discuss and refuse to comment on blogs that use it. I also hate the blogger comment system and refuse to use that one. If it makes someone sign up for something else, I think it's a bad comment system. I just don't think you should put another step in how much effort it takes a reader to leave you a comment.
That being said Discuss and livefyre seem to be 2 of the most popular third party commenting systems out there.

Oh my goodness. I'm so sorry you lost everything. I still use the native Blogger comments. I know people say they won't leave comments because you have to sign up for something to do it, but I have a name/url option there that doesn't not require logging in or signing up for a blogger account.

Tracie, I did manage to get my comments back. I don't *love* Disqus, but it's working better than Intense Debate. I don't like the native Blogger system because I don't think it's very easy to reply to comments. Disqus makes that easy. I wish it made return visits easier, though.

Replying to comments in the native blogger version is annoying - I wish we had the option for email replies that other comment systems give you..
I'm glad you were able to get all your comment back! That is good.

I am sorry to hear you had those issues. I don't even remember the commenting system off of Blogger. I will tell you this much, I don't regret moving to WordPress though.

I really like Disqus. It's my preferred commenting system - both for my blog in addition to everyone else's. Why? 1. Because I don't want to have to work so hard just to comment on your website. 2. I don't want to have to fill out my information every time. 3. I don't want to comment using AIM or any other strange connection Blogger tries to make. That drives me bonkers. 4. I like that I can follow people and see what they are posting comments on. It helps me discover awesome content. 5. It's super easy to follow up when someone responds to my comment - I don't even have to go back to their website in order to respond again. 6. On that note, it makes it easier to remember that I've commented somewhere because I comment on a LOT of blogs.

I don't particularly like Disqus, but it's better than nothing, and it's so much better than Blogger's default! I'm so glad to see more and more bloggers use Disqus instead. It took Apple years to make iOS compatible with Blogger's comments... wouldn't think it is because Blogger has changed. Before it was impossible to comment on Blogger blogs from the iPad. With Disqus you can choose "let guest comment" or something like that, and then people without accounts can comment too. They just need to fill in a name and then the comment. The only downside is that guests won't get an e-mail when their comment has a reply. With Blogger's comments I do think there is a way to have e-mails sent when you reply to a comment, I've received e-mails like that from Blogger.
Can't you just uninstall and reinstall Intense Debate? It just installs using a widget if I don't remember wrong.
