So, I feel I've read every post out there on "how to start a blog" "tips on blogging" and all the other stuff involved with web hosting, domain names, themes, etc. But I'm feeling extremely overwhelmed on exactly where to start because everyone has their own opinions on the best hosting sites to use and such. I definitely want my own domain name and would want to own the content meaning I'll pay for a hosting site. However, I don't like the thought of some of the prices for themes and I want something simple I can customize but that's easy to use too as I'm not proficient in web coding. Does anyone have any advice to keep myself from feeling overwhelmed and stressed before I have even begun? I currently haven't even thought of a name for my blog I just know I want to make it happen and have a place to talk about all the wonderful things that go on in my life and my work. Any tips on how to get started without being completely overwhelmed would be great or just encouragement that I'm not alone in these feelings Thanks so much! Sincerely, Anna Harris

Hi Anna! I'm brand new here myself, but I found this website to be super helpful- amylynnandrews.com/how-to-blog/. She walks you through everything step by step. I did everything she said to do, beginning the process yesterday and so far this is my blog www.mamainthemiddle.com

Hi Kathy!
Thanks so much for this info. Your blog is beautiful. If you were able to pull that off with following the info from that site then I'm definitely going there next. I subscribed to your blog and will definitely let you know when I get mine up and running.
p.s. who do you host yours with? Are you doing paid hosting?

I know the feeling Anna Harris. I am also new to the blogging and is still busy with research before starting. Did you go with Wordpress.com or Wordpress.org? Which domain did you choose? I am still struggling with choosing a name. At the moment I just want to blog for fun and to share my thoughts and life with others. But I do want to leave some room for growth.

If you're going to self-host, pick a reputable host - HostGator, A Small Orange, BlueHost - they're all good for a beginning blogger, and not expensive. You can use GoDaddy to purchase your domain name - do a Google search for "GoDaddy coupons" first and you might be able to save a couple dollars on that. When you use a selfhosted WordPress site, there are hundreds of free themes you can choose from to get started. It doesn't make a lot of sense to spend a whole bunch of money to get your first blog started, themes are generally really easy to change later if you decide to upgrade. Even most free themes can be easily customized. That said, be really careful searching for free themes on the internet, make sure that you're dealing with a reputable website. You can look for themes directly from your WordPress dashboard after you set up your blog. Here's another list of free themes from some premium theme programmers: 120 Free Premium ThemesHere's a post I did on choosing a theme - Choosing a WordPress ThemeAnd here's one on choosing hosting and setting it up - Choosing a Hosting ServiceHope that helps!
