Good morning everyone - I don't have much to contribute on today's topic, but I wanted to start a thread for discussion.
Sponsored posts, ads, affiliate links...all of these are ways to make money blogging. I've noticed many of you have ads on your sites - how are they working for you?
I have a few affiliate links that I literally make pennies off of; I just removed a few from my sidebar because they weren't getting any traction and were taking up space.
If you have any questions or comments about monetizing your blog, join the conversation!

Just to add my two cents: I haven't made much money with affiliate marketing either Dana. I've heard some bloggers having made that their primary source of income; but, like you, I haven't had much luck with it. I think if you do affiliate you really have to commit to focusing and selling one particular type of product and go all in with salesmanship. I, for one, am not a natural born saleswoman. lol. If anyone has had success with affiliate marketing I'd love to read about it!
My biggest money maker to date has been through sponsored posts/advertorials. Second runner up would be Adsense.
I'll go ahead and be completely transparent because I know many who may be curious about numbers. On average, I make anywhere from $200-$500 from sponsored posts per month and around $150 per month from Adsense. Nothing to go running to the bank with, but it's great extra cash to have around. I have my hand in a few other monetizing pots but those only bring in a few dollars here and there.
The kind of harsh reality when it comes to monetizing a blog is that it's by no means a "get rich quick" sort thing. Out of the millions of parenting/mommy bloggers out there, only a small percentage have been able to crack that proverbial glass ceiling and make a true living from their blog. I don't want to rain on anyone's parade though. Making a living off of a blog is TOTALLY possible. It just takes a lot of hard work, patience, and consistency.

I've yet to have a cheque, period. I have adsense, but haven't made enough ($40 or so, when the min is $100) to get a cheque.
I just got accepted w/BlogHer though, so hopefully that will change things.

Hi Dana,
My main source of income is sponsored posts. It took me two years to earn my first $100 with Adsense and now I get paid every few months. It takes time but once you build your traffic up they will start to pay off.
With affiliate sales, I don't make a lot with that either. I blog about whatever strikes me but one thing is cloth diapers and I do get some affiliate money through cloth diaper stores since it's easy to work them into my content organically and promote sales and whatnot. With Shareasale, some retailers send bonuses to post and I have done a few of those and made a handful of sales and am up to $45. I have seen some people make hundreds, even thousands per month with Shareasale and I don't know how they do it!

I believe the key to affiliate sales isn't to just put up an ad and hope that someone clicks on it. I get $50-$100 a month with Amazon, not much but you can share old blog posts through your social channels to get new readers on it. I will write an entire blog post on one concept from a book I read - and then create a call to action asking my readers to purchase the book/product. I even had an entire series devoted to one book.
