I think some require the use of a button. For exmaple, Clever Girls Collective does and their program even lets you know if it isn't installed correctly.

monroefiles I moved all of my network buttons to a separate page called "connections." They all contribute to the speed of your site, so unless they're requiring you to put them on the front page, I'd go with your idea of keeping them at a minimum. Some of them have required code embedded so they have to be somewhere on your site to work with the company.

I love the idea of the buttons on their own page to keep your site clean and still have structure. I wasn't sure if having the buttons were required or more of having etiquette. TY

Question about buttons: If you sign up with a PR company and they give a url code for a button, do you always place it on your blog? Or just pick the top 3 you work with the most? I use my links within my blog posts, or if the link happens to match up with a theme going on at the time, I MIGHT put it in a sidebar during the season, but I also try to only get affiliate links with companies that match the topics on my blog.

Lots of great advice! girlonthemove, I would love to hear more about how you pitched companies about events. I think a while back you suggested the book "Build Up Your Blog", do you have any other advice about approaching organizations, like a blog post hiding out in your archives or other suggestions? littleearthling I've heard of CleverGirls before, would you recommend them to a blog monitization newbie? I see you have to apply and be accepted, and I'm not sure my little blog will pass! zonemom your list is great! I have a question though, are the ones with "mom" in the name moms only, or are they open to everyone? This is seeming more and more like a reality to me. Have you registered your blogs as LLCs? did you have any trouble setting up direct deposits into your bank accounts? Do you get sent W2s? I'm also wondering if I should hold off applying to join any networks until I'm back in the US. I'm in Germany until the end of June, and I think that might limit some opportunities. Thanks a lot ladies!

I am really stuck on the process of beginning to monetize my blog.. Any help would be really appreciated!!
I am terrified of making any changes to the html of my template. I have been approached by a company to be an affiliate through SHare-a-Sale, but that requires that I add a tracking link to my template. I THINK I understand how, but I am really afraid I will make a wrong change that I can't fix! Any advice for how to get some help? I blog on Blogger.
Also - when a company requests an W-9 form (and SS#) - how comfortable are you all in providing this by email or submitting the form? What is the best way? Thanks to anyone with any suggestions!

I know I am late on this, but I've been subbing at school the last 3 days so I've missed out. I do have a question about Adsense. I have an adsense in my sidebar, but I see adsenses with pictures, banners, etc and a little triangle thing in the right corner that says ad choices or something. How do I get that? And how is the best way to use the adsense? I used to use it on my website LONG ago and it had pictures and got lots of clicks.

I use Google AdSense on my blog (I think that's what you're talking about) and really like it...it's a pretty passive way to make money

OklahomaJamie when you set up a new adsense unit, it allows you to choose whether you want display ads, text ads or both. Maybe you only have text ads selected if you're not seeing the pictures and banners. Try going in and clicking "edit ad type." If you do have display ads selected and they aren't showing up, it could be that only text ads are available for you OR you just might need to create a new ad, recopy the code and try it again. Hope that helps.

susanf when I was on Blogger, I put the html code for ads in a widget. Have you tried that?

Also - when a company requests an W-9 form (and SS#) - how comfortable are you all in providing this by email or submitting the form? What is the best way? That's something that really worries me, too. I know they've got to be able to pay me somehow, and that comes with tax forms, etc, but giving out my SSN online just feels like I'm asking for trouble. I'm more comfortable about companies that want to work through paypal or amazon payments, but I recently found one that looked promising but paid through something called Stripe. While I'm sure it's legitimate, having to give out my bank and Social Security information across so many platforms really makes me hesitate about monetizing my blog.

zonemomThanks Anitra! I will have to see if I can use a widget. Good idea. Share-a-Sale is a company I am signing up with - and they have provided a piece of code and told me where to put it in the the template - but maybe a widget would work? A lot less scary to do! It is interesting to hear I am not the only person reluctant to give out my SS#. Have a really great week!

Should I choose text and display ads, or just display ads? I have text and display chosen, but it never shows anything but text.
